Picking a consultant team.

Updated: Mar 11

Now that we've gone over the basics, it's time to start the research process.

Google makes everything so easy nowadays. You can do a quick search and find multiple home designers who can help you with your dream home and some niche designers who specialise in certain types of projects. You just need to put in the right keywords.

Keep it simple. To get a more accurate search outcome, just search the keywords for the type of home you want to build. "contemporary or traditional, large, small or medium, home". Another keyword that is helpful is the town, suburb or locality you plan to build in. That can filter out other states designers. This is important because licensing in Australia is state based and Queensland, as an example, will not allow designers from other states to practise there.

Once you have found a few designers that you think could help you, it's now time to get in contact. Most websites have an email contact. That's the best way to get in contact with a home designer. Arrange a time to meet and go from there. You should meet at least two, but preferably three.

The key things to think about when selecting someone to help you with the design of your home is that they should have expertise with the type of home or renovation you are building. They should also be nice, easy to speak to and have your best interests at heart. You want someone who seems trustworthy and has the knowledge to support you through the process.

Most of all....You should like them. This process can be challenging sometimes and you need someone who you can work with and like, after it is all said and done. I still have relationships with many of my clients. Some have become friends and these are the types of outcomes that you should be aiming for, not adversarial.

Building Designers all come with a list of contacts, builders engineers, surveyors and specialists who can assist you to get the best outcome. Once you pick your lead home designer, you effectively get a consultant team. Your primary designer will lead the consultancy side of your project when engaged to do this.

In a way, you are already researching.....you're here.

Signing off,
